ENGLISH GRAMMAR TERMS
Term Definition
Noun A word that represents :
  1. a person, for example Adam, teacher
  2. a place, for example Egypt, school
  3. a thing, for example coffee, book
  4. an idea or quality, for example danger , happiness
Pronoun A word that is used instead of a noun, for example:
  1. he instead of Adam,
  2. she instead of Hannah,
  3. they instead of Adam and Ali
Adjective A word that describes a noun or pronoun, for example fat, thin, yellow, green, pretty, interesting, satisfying
Verb A word that describes an action or state.
Examples : run, see, be
Past tense It’s used to express an action that has happened or a state that previously existed.
Examples : ate, looked, wrote
Present tense It’s used to express an action thatis currently going on or habitually performed or general statements of fact.
Examples : eat, look, write
Present continuous tense It’s used to express an action that is in progress at that very moment.
Examples : is eating, is looking, is writing
Future tense It’s used to express an activity that will happen in the future.
Examples : will eat, will look, will write
Preposition A word that indicates the relationship between a noun or pronoun and other words in a sentence.
Examples : on, over, above
Conjunction A word that connects two words, sentences or phrases together.
Examples: and, but, for, nor, so, or
Interjections An abrupt remark, especially as an aside or interruption.
Examples: oh, alas, wow
